Google Snubs Tech News Outlet CNET
|
Google Inc. is refusing to speak with reporters at CNET's online news site after it ran a story that used Google's chief executive to illustrate how easily the company's search engine finds personal information.
Google told News.com, the online tech news service of CNET Networks Inc., last week that it would not speak to any of its reporters for a year, according to News.com's editor.
Google was angered by a story last month that focused on potential threats the search engine leader's product poses to personal privacy, said Jai Singh, the News.com editor-in-chief.

Yahoo Launches Self-Service Tools For Publishing Ads
|
Yahoo Inc. on Wednesday launched in beta a service that enables small and medium-sized web sites to publish text-based ads and share in the revenue from Yahoo advertisers.
The service, which is only available during the testing phase by invitation, is meant to broaden the reach Yahoo can provide to its advertisers, Willan Johnson, general manager of Yahoo Publisher Network, said.
"What (advertisers) are interested in is getting leads to their web sites and generating sales," Johnson said. "This is a way of getting advertisers more leads by extending our distribution to small and medium-sized publishers."

Increase Productivity! With ClipBoard Extender
|
Increase your business productivity.
ClipMate enhances the Windows clipboard, making it a true power tool. The cut/copy paste capability of Windows works well for transferring single items of data, but is not useful if you want to move a lot of data or keep data longer than until your next cut or copy.
ClipMate works alongside the regular Windows clipboard and remembers every piece of data (both text and graphics) that you cut or copy. Once your data is in ClipMate, you can select an item and it is automatically placed back on the clipboard or directly into the application you were using.
You can view, print, edit, reformat, convert to upper/lower case, search, rename, and reorder clip items. There is even a built-in spellchecker. You can create an unlimited number of collections to store your data, and you have full control over the retention rules so that your collections will fit your own work process.
Download ClipMate to increase your business productivity.

Marketing Efforts to Consider
|
In order to create consistent sales cycles and a positive growth trend businesses usually engage in both short and long term marketing efforts.
Short-term marketing efforts tend to cause sudden sales spikes which rarely last. These sharp sales increases are usually the result of a targeted marketing campaign or time limited offer. While short-term marketing produces sales, long-term marketing efforts must be mixed in to sustain sales.

Rumors About Google Banning Directories
|
There were some rumors in the Webmaster World Forum that Google is changing the way it looks at directories like Web Search Engines . It appears Google may be penalizing the mini-directories. While they are attempting to stop search engine spamming I think they are clearly missing the boat in seeing the value of these niche portals. These sites make it very easy to find topic specific information in a single location and while they may all be rooted at DMOZ, they are significantly easier to navigate. Take a look at Monitoring Tools or Investing Partners to get a better idea how these sites are useful to members of their industry or consumers.

Google Scholar Is Launched
|
Google has launched a beta version of Google Scholar
What is Google Scholar?
Google Scholar enables you to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web.
How does Google Scholar work?
Just as with Google Web Search, Google Scholar orders your search results by how relevant they are to your query, so the most useful references should appear at the top of the page. This relevance ranking takes into account the full text of each article as well as the article’s author, the publication in which the article appeared and how often it has been cited in scholarly literature. Google Scholar also automatically analyzes and extracts citations and presents them as separate results, even if the documents they refer to are not online. This means your search results may include citations of older works and seminal articles that appear only in books or other off line publications.

Comprehensive Article How *Not* To Write A Business Plan
|
PlanWare Business Plan Tip: How NOT to Write a Business Plan
Here are some suggestions to follow if you want to write a truly dreadful business plan, or to avoid if you wish to write a sound business plan:
- Don't include a contents list, don't number any pages and don't follow any consistent approach for section heading etc.
- Do write the plan's summary before you write the plan, or, better still, don't include any summary.
- Do start the plan with a series of tables showing your projections - the more detail and tables the better.
- Don't summarize the projections - let the reader figure out the full year totals and so on.
- If you include projected balance sheets, make sure that they don't balance.
- Don't produce any separate cash flow forecasts, just rename the P&L or income projections.

Difficult to Believe - Cyber Crime On The Decline
|
A downward turn in overall cyber crime has hit its fourth year, said the 10th-annual survey on computer crime released Thursday, and average financial losses have tumbled by more than half.
The yearly survey, which is conducted by the Computer Security Institute (CSI) in coordination with the FBI, found that the average dollar amount pegged to a security breach fell by a whopping 61 percent compared to 2004, when the loss per polled company or government agency was estimated at $526,000. In 2005, the amount per respondent was only $203,000.

Steady As She Goes For Small Business IT Spending
|
Small businesses remain optimistic about the near-term outlook for the economy, and this is translating into solid expectations for IT spending over the next few months.
Small-business owners’ expectations for the economy bumped up in May compared with April, according to the Small Business Optimism Index. Expectations are slightly lower than they were a year ago, but on average, small-business owners expect GDP growth over the next year to be in the 3.5 percent range, about where it is now and above the long-term trend growth rate of 3.0 percent. The Small Business Optimism Index is published monthly by the National Federation of Independent Business, a 600,000-member small-business advocacy group based in Washington.

Small Business Blogging Coming Into Its Own
|
Blogging is growing so fast it's hard to get a handle on the numbers. Recently, BusinessWeek estimated that there were nearly 9 million blogs out there, a number that is growing at the rate of a whopping 40,000 per day. Of course, the majority of these are personal, not business-related, but blogging is beginning to catch on in businesses large and small as well. A survey of small business owners by HP earlier this year found that 10 percent have included blogs as part of their marketing plans, with an additional 16 percent planning to invest in blogs over the next three years. Those are interesting stats.

Being Watched
|
Really, really interesting article by InternetWeek about how technology and privacy are on a collision course.
Lots of readers had opinions on Microsoft and Google licensing satellite pictures of Earth and using them as part of their local-search services. Both currently provide pictures that show buildings and streets, but no ground-level detail. However, Orbimage, which is supplying pictures to Microsoft, says it plans to offer high-resolution pictures in 2007 that would let you count the manholes in Manhattan.
With that kind of detail, and the expectation that many other Internet companies would start using satellite-generated pictures, the idea of having all those cameras pointed at us made me feel uneasy. Some readers agreed, while others didn't think it was a big deal. A few, however, were even more paranoid.

Google Indexing Subscription Content
|
Google is testing a premium service that will open up mainstream access to the "Deep Web," allowing webmasters with restricted or subscription content to let in Google and provide the masses with free previews.
The service is being tested server-side with a small number of sites that are under strict confidentiality agreements. Premium content will be indexed and tagged as paid, and will be displayed in a special content area on the right side of Google's search results underneath the AdSense advertising links.
Some paid articles are "first click free" and will appear within Google's "natural" aggregated search results - if the participating publication decides that the content should be accessible when Google is the referrer.

Google plans pay service to rival PayPal -WSJ

Usually consumers benefit from competition!
Google Inc. this year plans to offer an electronic-payment service that could help the Internet-search company diversify its revenue and may heighten competition with eBay Inc.'s PayPal unit, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
Exact details of the search company's planned service are not known, the report said, but quoted people familiar with the matter as saying it could have similarities with PayPal, which allows consumers to pay for purchases on Web sites by funding electronic-payment accounts from their credit cards or checking accounts.

Skype in merger talks with Yahoo?
|
Engadget is reporting that an aquisition might be in Skype's future.
Skype and Yahoo are in "close contact," as in, snuggly enough to talk about a possible buyout. It makes sense from the standpoint that Yahoo already wants to add voice to their Yahoo! Messenger platform, and Skype would be an attractive acquisition in terms of merging IM with VoIP. The concern, though, is that it would complicate Yahoo's relationship with the Baby Bells as it tries to build its media empire status. In any case, though, it does look like both parties are interested in cooking up some sort of commercial partnership. Ain't courtship grand?

Wikis generally allow web pages to be written, edited and created collectively in a web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and simple text. Most Wikis are open, and allow any user the ability to edit the contents of a Wiki web page. While some say this opens the concept to abuse, Wiki moderators and self-policing in the Wiki sector appear to be taking hold. Wiki supporters generally feel that it is generally easier to correct mistakes than create the content from scratch. Wikipedia is a standing symbol of what many would consider a succesful Wiki.

Small Business Security
|
There is an excellent article about small business security on the small business pipeline that all businesses should read:
By the time small businesses start worrying about security, it's too late. We ignore risk until threatened by an attack or natural disaster. If we're lucky, the threat passes us by, and we fall back into denial. If we're unlucky, disaster hits, and it puts us out of business.
Denial about security is self-defeating because the cost of loss is devastating. That's especially true of small businesses, where profit margins are often razor-thin.
I've had personal experience working in, and near, companies that learned those lessons the hard way. The lucky companies only lost information of financial value. In one instance, a security breach resulted in seven dead.

Developing Content Sites Article

Highly targeted, focused sites that are related to specific market segments are highly advantageous and can often be created using existing web content. The key is to provide value.
Think of the time spent surfing the web gathering resources and information. By creating a topic-centric resource compiling information, webmasters are providing a service or value. In many cases that value is simply the compilation of topic-specific information in a single resource. The compilation of this information in itself is the value.

American Small Business League’s Advocacy Leads to Changes in Federal Small Business Contracting Procedures
|
The American Small Business League welcomed a recent set of changes in Federal small business contracting procedures as long overdue, but warned that significant problems remain.
The ASBL – the only national organization defending the interests of small businesses in the Federal government’s $60-plus billion small business contracting program – has advocated for these and other changes since 2002. The Small Business Act of 1953 directs that at least 23 percent of federal government prime contracts go to small business. But a host of abuses and loopholes allow large companies to get many of these contracts. The Defense Department alone awarded more than $47 billion in “small business” contracts to huge corporations between 1998 and 2003, according to a 2004 report by the Center for Public Integrity.
The new changes attempt to close one of the many loopholes that allow this to happen. On April 22, the Small Business Administration and several Federal agencies announced they have revamped the small business designation process in the Central Contractor Registration (CCR) database. Federal agencies rely on the CCR database to determine whether a contractor qualifies as a small business.

And 75 per cent said the growth of the Internet had made it easier to launch one.

Twenty-eight per cent said they aspired to be an entrepreneur in order to do work they love or to integrate a passionate hobby into a career pursuit.

The Power and Value of Topical Search Engines
|
While many marketers are scrambling for links, any links, an area that is often overlooked is topic-specific search engines. What many don't realize is that these engines do produce traffic, and they often contain traffic that is very targeted. Anyone who has taken the time to analyze weblogs and track sales sources will likely see that targeted traffic converts at a significantly higher rate than non-targeted traffic.
A savvy online marketer realizes that often, the quality of the visitor is far more important than the quantity of visitors. Web marketers should focus their energies on attracting targeted traffic whenever possible.
For example, if you sell saddles, advertising on a site related to horses or advertising on a topical search engine like http://www.horse-stall.net will bring significantly more sales than advertising on a generic web site or search engine.

ENTERWeb, the Popular Knowledge Portal for Small Business (Enterweb.org) has Just Opened a Section on Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility
|
As recently as a decade ago, many companies viewed business ethics only in terms of administrative compliance with legal standards and adherence to internal rules and regulations. Today the situation is different. Attention to business ethics is on the rise across the world and many companies realize that in order to succeed, they must earn the respect and confidence of their customers. Like never before, corporations are being asked, encouraged and prodded to improve their business practices to emphasize legal and ethical behavior. Companies, professional firms and individuals alike are being held increasingly accountable for their actions, as demand grows for higher standards of corporate social responsibility.
Reflecting this new reality, ENTERWeb has just opened a new section on business ethics and corporate social responsibility, which will provide you with everything you need to know on the subject (and more).

How Podcasting Works

While some traditional radio talk shows have begun providing podcasts of their regularly-scheduled broadcasts, the bulk of the podcasts that have cropped up tend to be independent broadcasters who have a fascination with technology. As a result, some podcasts are a little rough around the edges. Nonetheless, it is clear that the technology provides a significant opportunity and potential. Even nay-sayers believe that podcasting is more than a passing fad.

Judge Sentences Spammer to Nine Years
|
A Virginia judge sentenced a spammer to nine years in prison Friday in the nation's first felony prosecution for sending junk e-mail, though the sentence was postponed while the case is appealed.
Loudoun County Circuit Judge Thomas Horne said that because the law targeting bulk e-mail distribution is new and raises constitutional questions, it was appropriate to defer the prison time until appeals courts rule.
A jury had recommended the nine-year prison term after convicting Jeremy Jaynes of pumping out at least 10 million e-mails a day with the help of 16 high-speed lines, the kind of Internet capacity a 1,000-employee company would need.

Google AdSense Changes to Reporting
|
Google's AdSense has improved channels functionality: better tools to help you optimize
Tuesday Google has introduced 3 updates to channel tracking, to make this feature even more useful:
Channel reports in real-time: Until now, channel data was delayed 2 days before appearing in your reports. We've upgraded our system to provide real-time reporting, allowing you to quickly react to changes in your ad performance on a page-by-page basis.
Remove channels: Your channels UI has been cleaned up, by introducing a 'Remove Channel' option that allows you to remove channels from your active and inactive lists.
"Shift-select" for channels: When selecting channels from the Reports page selection box, use SHIFT+click to select multiple channels at once.
More information about URL and custom channels is available from the support center.
Improved reporting: ad unit impressions vs. page impressions
We've added new options to your reporting page, allowing you to select from page impressions or ad unit impressions when generating your performance reports. Not sure what this means? Check out the AdSense Support center for an explanation of page impressions versus ad unit impressions.
In addition, your browser will now remember your prior report settings each time you select a report. If you have a favorite report that you run often, you're going to love this feature!

Phishing Being Threatened - Finally!

The Federal Trade Commission, the National Consumers League, and Microsoft on Thursday told consumers that they have the power to stop online identity thieves. Hedging its bets, however, Microsoft also announced it had filed over 100 lawsuits against alleged phishers.
Phishing, where criminals attempt to hoodwink consumers into giving up personal information, including credit card and bank account numbers, by sending them e-mail that directs them to legitimate-looking Web sites, is a huge problem, all three organizations said at a Washington, D.C. press conference Thursday.

Wiki means fast

Online collaborative sites open to everyone enable the sharing of ideas.
There is a public Web site where people can find a Web log written by some prominent members of the government information technology community. Visitors can view a list of officials in the CIO Council's Communities of Practice and read ongoing revisions to a major government document, the data reference model. Members of the public also are contributing to the discussions.
An emerging technology called "wiki" makes this collaboration possible. The word comes from "wiki wiki," Hawaiian for "fast." Wiki technology creates what is essentially a public Web log, one which anyone with a Web browser can add to or modify.

Making Better Cash Flow Forecasts
|
A key element of controlling cash is to forecast cash flows and requirements. This entails forecasting and tabulating all significant cash inflows relating to sales, new loans, interest received etc. and then analyzing in detail the timing of expected payments relating to suppliers, wages, other expenses, capital expenditure, loan repayments, dividends, tax, interest payments etc.
The difference between the cash in- and out-flows within a given period indicates the net cash flow. When this net cash flow is added to or subtracted from opening bank balances, any likely short-term bank funding requirements can be ascertained.

Interesting article on Search Engine Optimization
|
The article is interesting, I don't agree 100% with the sentiment expressed but its a view worth considering.
"Greg Boser manipulates search engines for a living, and there's little the Googles of the world can do about it."
"Boser, who owns and operates WebGuerrilla, a web marketing outfit based in Valencia, California, is not alone. An entire industry of search engine optimizers, called SEOs, has sprung up, many of which take advantage of loopholes in the way rankings are calculated."
The best line is at the very end of the article -
"Finally, there is "search spam," which are machine-generated pages designed to appear in the engines to attract traffic (and ultimately increase revenue)."
But Boser defines search spam another way: "It's any site that ranks above mine."

Businesspeople don't necessarily follow flawed strategies because they're greedy, arrogant or careless. Our brains are wired in ways that tend to prevent us from following tried-and-true strategic principles.
That's the view of Charles Roxburgh, a London director of consulting firm McKinsey & Co. who cites behavioral economics studies that show decision-makers commit similar mistakes in ways that suggest irrational behavior is innate.

Innovative Business Use of RSS as a Technology
|
RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a new way to broadcast corporate news and structured information. RSS offers a quick, easy corporate communication channel. The RSS contents are published as a feed and the feed's content keep customers, partners and journalists abreast of corporate news and information. The RSS feeds are read using a tool referred to as a news aggregator, or an RSS reader. The aggregator periodically checks to see if the RSS feed has been updated. As the feed is updated, new information will automatically appear in the RSS reader.
While RSS was at one point only considered to be a means to deliver news headlines, RSS has quickly become a powerful medium to disseminate all kinds of information. As traditional marketers are attempting to rein in content delivery, measuring e-mail open rates, click-throughs and conversions, Internet users are fighting to gain control over the content they receive. Savvy marketers and business owners are using RSS as a way to improve corporate communication and increase their external exposure and brand appeal.

US Domain Owners Lose Privacy
|
The U.S. Commerce Department has ordered companies that administer internet addresses to stop allowing customers to register .us domain names anonymously using proxy services.
The move does not affect owners of .com and .net domains. But it means website owners with .us domains will no longer be able to shield their name and contact information from public eyes.
The Electronic Privacy Information Center said the move violates First Amendment rights to anonymous free speech. And the representative of one of the largest domain-registration companies is concerned that customers who have been victims of stalkers won't be able to protect their privacy without changing their web address to a domain that offers anonymity.

Google Formally Launches Desktop Search
|
Google Inc. late on Sunday made its desktop search widely available as it takes on rivals Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. in the race to help users find e-mail and files stored on computer hard drives.
Google in October was the first major search company to roll out a test version of its desktop search offering.
Google Desktop Search locates e-mail, AOL chat sessions and previously viewed Web pages. It also searches various file types, from PDFs and Microsoft Word files to audio, video and photo files.
Office workers and other computer users previously had few effective tools for finding documents and e-mail buried on their personal computers. Search companies and others have jumped in to fill that void with the hope of replicating the success Web search has enjoyed.

Kerry Takes On Small-Business Law Violators

If you've been wondering what John Kerry has been doing since he lost the presidential race against President George W. Bush, look no further. The Massachusetts senator has called for a full audit of the federal government's Small Business Administration (SBA) for fiscal 2003 in an effort to ensure the SBA is protecting small businesses. A December 2004 report from the SBA Office of Advocacy found that more than $2 billion in federal contracts that were designated for small businesses in fiscal 2002, many of which were IT-focused, were, in fact, awarded to large and midsize companies. Kerry called for the SBA to investigate 44 firms.

Podcasting is Not Just for Music
|
Although podcasting is new, it is well on its way to becoming a mainstream communication medium. Podcasting, simply put, is audio files that are delivered via RSS. Many people believe that podcasting is solely for the distribution of music files, but really, nothing could be further from the truth. This emerging method of audio file distribution has opened an array of marketing and communication opportunities to businesses. Currently, most who are familiar with podcasting are technically savvy, but it is clear that podcasting will be more than a passing fad as many businesses are adopting podcasting and employing it in unusual yet powerful ways. Podcasting can be used for talk shows, tutorials, music demos, educational training, stories, comedy clips, debates or even foreign language tutorials.

Legalities on the Web
|
Copyright protection for a web site is just as enforceable as it is for traditional media. U.S. copyright law states that electronic files—including web files—are copyrighted the moment they're put into a tangible form, even if they're not on display to the general public. Protected web files may include the site's content, code, scripting, graphic images, sound and video files.
"One way to determine if your site's content has been stolen is to use the search engines," said Matt Naeger, Vice President and General Counsel at IMPAQT. "The primary way is to see your copy in the search results. Copy-paste an extended piece of text from your web site and see what other web sites show up for that same text. Typically two sites shouldn't legitimately show up for the exact same web copy. I would say I have seen higher rates of recidivism, if you can show publication through the search engine."
